The penguins have turned the S/390 into a screaming, take-no-prisoners Linux machine. Compiled binaries are available that contain everything to install a complete GNU/Linux OS.
Mainframe hard- and software supports multiple ways of running an OS. A Linux for S/390 will run either on native hardware, e.g. LPAR (logical partition), or as a VM guest (virtual machine).
